A day tour through the areas of Ramanagara and Channapatna, two towns near Bangalore famous for their cottage industries.
The Culture tour aims to take a visitor on a Silk route - from the humble silkworms, their cocoons to the weaving and dyeing in the factories - in an effort to show the process and the diverse people behind the silk industry of South India. Do you know India produces 20% of the world’s silk? (Of course, no guesses on who is the world’s largest producer of silk).
We journey onwards to Channapatna, learn about the communities that live here and their famous wooden toys livelihood, their journey across times and modern interpretations of their products. We will visit one such wooden toys and handicrafts factories and learn about how the making of these products from the wood block to the finished toy or handicraft.
While the silk rearing and cocoon is in these towns, the yarn making and weaving is closer home to Bangalore. The final silk saree not only involves silk but also skillful weaving styles based on the region of the weaving communities.
