The History of Christmas in Bangalore

The history of Christmas celebrations in Bangalore dates back several centuries, tied closely to the city’s colonial past. With the arrival of the Portuguese and later British influences, Christian traditions took root in Karnataka and continue to flourish in the city's vibrant cultural landscape.

The city of Bengaluru was anglicised as Bangalore, especially the area where the English Cantonment, with a huge Christian population, resided & hence I use the name, 'Bangalore' in this blog, though it has been changed to its older 'Bengaluru' name now.
St. Mary’s Basilica: A Historic Beacon of Festivities

At the heart of Christmas in Bangalore is St. Mary’s Basilica, the city’s oldest standing church. Its grand architecture and deeply rooted traditions make it a focal point for celebrations. Visitors flock to witness the Nativity scenes, attend midnight mass, and experience the vibrant decorations that light up the basilica during this time.

Other churches such as St. Mark’s Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Church, and Holy Ghost Church also host special services and carol singing, offering spiritual solace and festive cheer to thousands.
