In Indian cosmology, the Sun is not merely a celestial body but Surya, the source of life, health, and time itself. Vedic texts refer to him as the “eye of the universe”—the witness of all movement.
By the early centuries CE, Indian astronomers were already making sophisticated observations. Aryabhata (5th century CE) accurately described the Earth’s rotation on its axis and explained the apparent movement of the heavens—ideas remarkably advanced for their time.

On the eastern coast of India stands one of the most ambitious architectural statements ever made—the 13th-century Sun Temple at Konark in Odisha.
Designed as Surya’s colossal chariot, the temple rests on 24 massive stone wheels, each intricately carved. These are not decorative flourishes. Each wheel functions as a sundial, capable of telling time with remarkable accuracy through the position of shadows cast by the spokes.
The seven horses pulling the chariot represent days of the week; the wheels track hours and seasons. Together, the structure becomes a monumental timekeeping device—an architectural embodiment of solar motion.
Konark reminds us that temples were once centres of scientific literacy, where cosmic order was made visible and intelligible to all.
In Gujarat, the Modhera Sun Temple offers a quieter, equally sophisticated lesson in solar alignment.
Built in the early 11th century, the temple was aligned carefully with the Sun’s path across the year. On equinox days, the rising sun’s rays travel through the temple’s entrance, illuminating the sanctum in a carefully choreographed play of light and shadow.
The temple complex includes a stepped water tank (Surya Kund), reinforcing the link between celestial cycles and earthly sustenance. Architecture, astronomy, water management, and ritual converge seamlessly—revealing a worldview where science and spirituality were never separate disciplines.
Closer home, Bengaluru holds one of the most intimate examples of solar architecture—the Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple.
Carved partly into natural rock, this cave temple becomes a living calendar during Makara Sankranti. As the Sun begins its northward journey, its rays pass precisely between the horns of a stone Nandi, travel through a narrow opening, and illuminate the Shiva Linga deep inside the cave.
This phenomenon—known today as solar fenestration—marks the exact transition of the Sun’s movement. What feels miraculous is, in truth, the result of meticulous observation, mathematical precision, and architectural foresight.

Makara Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu coincide with the Sun’s northward turn—a period when days lengthen, fields rest after harvest, and agricultural communities pause to give thanks.
