South Parade - Tales of the English Cantonment

South Parade - the heart of an English military cantonment, now named after Mahatma Gandhi as MG Road - is a very different character from the old city of Bengaluru.

This trail takes you back to the Victorian era, when officers paraded down the road, memsahibs in colourful hats went about their day, and laid-back homes with gardens were the norm in this part of the city.

As you walk along South Parade, you’ll encounter old churches, clubs, shops, hotels and buildings that tell stories of the people who lived and worked here. There are stories of soldiers and officers, merchants and missionaries, and the many people who made the Cantonment their home. You’ll also discover how this military settlement grew into a lively commercial and social centre — and eventually became the MG Road we know today.
